How to improve your listening comprehension in English

Each of us was more or less faced with the challenge of not feeling comfortable with English by ear, which was often expressed during a telephone call.

When I was still in the US, answering a phone call was a huge fear for me, even if it was from a friend.

Because we are unable to see the person as they are, it is more difficult for us to understand speech by ear. During a real conversation, or when watching a movie, the predictive ability may work for us, or the ability to predict what the speaker is going to say based on his gestures, emotions, and the situation in which he is in.

As an example, if we take a phone call, except for the conversation of the speaker, no one can help us...

The purpose of today's post is to tell you how I overcame my fear of speaking over the phone, especially with people who were unfamiliar to me, such as British and Irish.

RADIO

I'll start with a regular radio. Those who enjoy listening to music will particularly enjoy this option. The daily English you hear will complement your favorite songs. Additionally, there will be ads that are constantly repeated, the words of which will eventually sit in your head, adding new vocabulary to your vocabulary.

My personal choice was `` Spin 1038 ''

Having an application that is very easy to use makes this Irish-made radio appealing.

PODCASTS

This art form has never taken hold of me. I had trouble keeping my attention and focus on listening because I was simply not interested in what I was listening to.

Podcasts are my primary way of staying entertained and educated on the way to and from work today.

Choosing a podcast that piques your interest is the most important step!

Obviously, I prefer Google Podcasts.

Here are some accounts that I recommend to those who want to learn English.

Adept English Podcast

It is suitable for beginners. It explains new words in a clear and concise manner.

Podcasts in English

Short podcasts for those who aren't ready to listen to an hour-long podcast yet

Grammar Girl

Besides providing language learning tips, this podcast also discusses correct pronunciation.

The Fluency Podcast

This is one of my favorite podcasts. Jack discusses idioms, phrasal verbs, and gives examples of their use.

Learning from this resource is extremely useful!

The British English

There is a podcast for anyone interested in British English, British culture, and expressions directly used in England.

The Unlocking British English

The purpose of this podcast is to help you improve your British English skills. Also, all listeners will be able to improve their English using this podcast's free chat app.

The following is a list of educational podcasts to help you get started. On top of that, you can choose any podcast you want related to your interests.

AUDIO BOOKS

Individuals who have already gained a good vocabulary and wish to become better at comprehension will benefit from this option.

However...

I also recommend one exercise that is suitable for beginners.

Listen to books while falling asleep.

Harry Potter was my book for the night)

Where can I find audiobooks?

Currently, YouTube has so many channels where everything is free. You can also look for podcast platforms. For instance, I found Harry Potter on Google Podcasts.

I have been able to accomplish my own goal by listening to podcasts and radio every day. Understanding listening as a skill that can only be developed with time and a willingness to recognize that it won't immediately bring you pleasure is the first step.
