Sex Education: filming locations

This September, a sequel to Sex Education, about the shy teenager Otis and his mother, a sexologist, will be released. In the new season, all of the action takes place in the same locations, and it is hard to guess what kind of country or period it is: America or Great Britain, the 80s, 90s, or our time.

The action takes place in a middle school in the small town of Moordale: the main character Otis, together with a friend, organizes a kind of sex school for teenagers at the school to help classmates deal with sexual problems. It was a huge hit, thanks to the sparkling script written by Laura Nani who was making her big-screen debut, the hot topics raised about gender equality, bullying, and, of course, Gillian Anderson as Otis's mother who is always open to conversation about sex.

Apparently, the school that Otis and Maeve attend is the old campus of a university in Carleon, South Wales. After merging with other institutions in 2016, the building was closed as part of the University of Wales. Students living on campus were protesting their resettlement and storming a meeting of the university leadership when it took place.

As described by screenwriter Laurie Nunn, Sex Education has an aesthetic reminiscent of 1980s cinema. Producer Jamie Campbell explains that they wanted the film to be different from British TV series about teenagers. Because of this, there are iron lockers and pennants on campus, the elders wear jackets with school emblems, and the coolies play football, but not the ordinary kind.

The gym is the only location not filmed in Carleon on Moordale High. The theatre featured in the scene was Porth Paget in Penarth. With money from the Earl of Plymouth, the building was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is usually used for plays and performances, not school meetings and discos.

The remaining locations are located near the campus: the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire near the border with Wales and the Wye Valley. Several of the series' splash screens were shot nearby. The Villa The Chalet in Symonds Yat is also the residence of the protagonist and his mother. The house can be rented.

A few characters in the series work at Browns Stores on Llandogo's southern outskirts, just south of Symonds Yat.

Eric and Otis drive across Wireworks Bridge in Tintern, a small town, to and from school and a party.

The second season of Sex Education features several new locations. Headman Jackson swims in Newport International Sports Village's pool in the first episode.

Otis works out on the treadmill at Cwmbran Stadium.

Adam's Mountainside Military College was filmed at Margam Castle in South Wales. Built-in the 1830s, it is now a popular tourist attraction because ghosts are rumored to live there.

Near Symonds Yat and Otis' home, the rest of the characters are enjoying the Vauxhall Fields fair.

Bigsweyr House, where Amy throws a party at the beginning of Season 1, and Otis and Maeve give their classmates some solid advice, overlooks the majestic banks of the Wye and sits on the England-Wales border. It is privately owned by the Hopkinson family, who told The Guardian they enjoyed having the team visit.

In the new season, your favorite characters will return to the screens, and therefore the actors: Gillian Anderson as Gene Milborn, Asa Butterfield as Otis, Emma Makei will return as Maeve, Nkuti Gatwa as Eric, and Kedar Wilms-Striling as Jackson. But there will also be new faces: actress Jemima Kirk will portray Mordale's former student Hope, and Jason Isaacs will portray Mr. Groff's older brother, Peter, with whom he will live after being separated from Mrs. Groff. Actor and musician Dua Saleh will portray a non-binary student of the school who opposes the school's rules and clashes with its new headmistress.

Mainly, there is an intrigue over whether Otis and Maeve will be together, due to a new rival of Otis'—a guy in a wheelchair—and what will happen to Otis' mother Jean?
