Linus Von Stumberg | Interview

What made you start dancing?

A friend of mine used to dance and showed me her songs she was dancing to at a dance class. I liked these songs and she told me that I should go there too. So did I. But I really started dancing (take more classes and dance in a company) later at the age of 16.

What type of classes do you prefer? Do you dance only choreography or do you prefer classes from different styles?

I like to try out different things. Especially because I'm trying to find out who I am in dance so i want to get many inputs to filter out what feels good to me. So I freestyle, take different classes and choreograph.

What is the difference between dancers from Europe and the United States?

Well... I can only tell the differences between the dancers I know in Switzerland and what I've seen and experienced in LA: I think the biggest difference between Switzerland and LA is motivation...

Dancers in LA (the people I met and saw in class) are way more motivated in becoming better, finding themselves and supporting others.

Of course, we have a great vibe in Switzerland as well but I feel in LA there are more people who have that fire which brings the whole feeling of community and energy in class to a higher level. I think it's because in LA there are so many great dancers and choreographers and you get so much inspiration.

How was your last trip to LA? Do you have any memories that influenced your thinking?

My last time in LA was also my first time.

I always had the meaning that in a period of finding or changing yourself in dance you have to try out, make mistakes and look weird sometimes. As long as it feels right you are doing great. When you are at this point you can improve yourself so fast and find out what exactly you want to improve in dance or in which direction you want to go next. I took so many classes in LA that told me the same thing. But the greatest part about that was how people support each other in class. This atmosphere gave me so much courage, acceptance and confirmation.

Did you teach at Snowglobe? Was it good? What was your impression of this studio?

Haha... yes I taught twice a collab class with Jason Rodelo at Snowglobe. It was super cool. I've only known Jason for a few days. Our paths crossed in class at Kinjaz Dojo and he had seen a video of mine, so we decided to do a collab which we taught at Snowglobe in his normal class as well as another day.

I love the Snowglobe Perspective. They have awesome teachers, great classes and the Studio itself is absolutely beautiful. The vibe in classes and the community is very beautiful over there!

Movement Lifestyle or Millenium? and why?

Well, it depends what you are looking for.

I am more the community dancer than an industry dancer. So I have been more to Movement Lifestyle. But I can tell that Movement Lifestyle is going more and more in the comercial dance/ industry dancing scene. Most of the classes are comercial classes and in the community classes are only a few people whereas the comercial classes are full. I've been to Millenium only three times , to take masterclasses, so I can't really tell how it is in the regular classes over there.         BUT my two absolutely favorite studios were the Kinjaz Dojo and Snowglobe Perspective! Like the Snowglobe has the Kinjaz Dojo great classes, teachers and an awesome vibe as well! The community and the exchange with other dancers at the Dojo is great. In the second half of my stay in LA I have danced more in these two studios.

What's the most important thing about dance for you?

Most important for me in dance is expressing yourself - transforming impressions you get from music and feelings into movement.

What do you do when you're not dancing?

I just finished the gymnasium and have to find out what I want to study at university next summer and do my driving license. Beside dancing I do a bit of modeling. I like to write, watch movies and youtube, go snowboarding and meet up with people.

What do u thing about dance industry in swiss?

Switzerland has great payments for dancers. In the industry scene in Switzerland and to get booked for dance jobs you have to be known because there aren't a lot of auditions. For most of the jobs the same people get booked.                               The community scene is very supportive and teachings are well payed.

Some words for dancers

Explore! Don't be afraid to try different things out and never be afraid to not look good! You can't be perfect at something you have never done before.

Try to find out what you can do with your body and what feels good. Everybody is different and don't think you can't be great only because you are different. Find out who you are and learn how to manoeuvre your body like you want it to move.
